A Message from the President
8th Grade Parents:
This morning, the administration had a wonderful meeting with our 8th grade students. A week ago, a number of them had approached us about adjusting some of our day-to-day protocols and procedures now that they have effectively transitioned into their new home at Coyle and Cassidy. In their words, “they are comfortable in their new school, so it is time to let them fly.” In response to their initiative and maturity, we believe that we can provide them with age- appropriate independence and freedom during the school day. Next week, we will allow them to go to their lockers and to and from lunch without teacher escorts. For those students who stay after school, they will also be given the freedom to go to extra help, practices, etc. without an escort after signing in at ESP.
Other age-appropriate adjustments that are under consideration are the following:
In addition to age-appropriate changes in protocol, we also discussed possible 8th grade privileges. Some of their ideas are more freedom in the shoes that can be worn, nail polish for girls, an 8th grade dance or event, and a class sweatshirt.
As a school community, we want to insure the integrity of the middle school experience. 8th grade is an important time in the development of a child. We are thrilled with the maturity that this year’s class is displaying in advocating for themselves. All of their requests are reasonable. Given that you, as parents, are the primary educators, we welcome your thoughts and ideas for enhancing the 8th grade experience.
Student Fundraiser
Today was the last day for students to earn a “Jeans Day” for magazine/cookie sales. We are grateful to all students and parents who have embraced this fundraising opportunity to benefit the school. Students can continue to earn other rewards by selling 12 or more items. The final return day for ALL orders will be next Wednesday, October 22nd.

- Providing 8th graders who do not have a parent escort with the opportunity to attend the Masquerade Dance
- Allowing the 8th graders to attend the annual high school Halloween rally
- Developing alternative procedures for morning drop-off for 8th graders who carpool with
high school students
- Allowing 8th graders to obtain water and snacks from the cafeteria vending machines
afterschool.

A Note from the Principal
I would like to thank all of our parents who have given so generously of their time and talent to assist with the magazine/cookie sales and the upcoming Open House. We are so fortunate to have your support! I hope to see our 8th graders and their families at Open House. There are many exciting advantages available to you as a current member of our community.
There are only two weeks left in our first quarter. Parents of high school students are reminded to check the Parent Portal so that you can be apprised of your child’s progress. Middle school families are asked to check the Friday folder. Do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
Remember, there is no school on Monday, October 20th. Teachers will be attending a diocesan wide professional day. Enjoy the long weekend!
Sincerely,
Kathleen St. Laurent

Absent Notes (High School and Middle School)
Whenever a student is absent from school, a note is required when the student returns to school. The note should state the date(s) of the absence and the reason for the absence. Failure to present an absent note may result in school detention. If a student is absent for four or more consecutive school days, a medical note is required for re-admittance to school.
Junior Ring Mass (High School)
On Tuesday, October 28, 2014 the Junior Class will be honored during the Junior Ring Mass. The Mass will begin at 12:00 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Church. Following the ceremony, juniors and their invited guests will go to the parish hall for refreshments and presentation of the class video. The liturgy marks a very important time in the lives of the members of the Junior Class. Students will be receiving class rings or another ring/jewelry item of symbolic importance. Juniors will receive a letter regarding more specific information and a “sign and return” page. A letter pertinent to parents of juniors was emailed to parents of juniors on October 16th.
The school day (for all students in all grades) will begin with regularly scheduled classes and will culminate with the Junior Ring Mass for students in grades 9-11. Seniors will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m. Full uniform is required for freshmen, sophomores and seniors. Junior parents are to refer to the letter for dress regulations given to their children.
The representative from Herff Jones Ring Co. has sent out notices of ring balances. Please call the Herff Jones Ring Representative at 781-749-2426, if you have questions. Mr. McCann will be at Coyle and Cassidy during the lunches on October 27th. If you would like to pay the balance (cash, check, or credit card) on that date you may do so. If you have a jewelry item that you would like to have presented to your son/daughter that was not purchased from Herff Jones, please place the jewelry item in a clearly marked box or container and send in the item to Ms. Mawn (Junior Class Moderator) by Friday, October 24, 2014.
Photo Retake Day (High School and Middle School Division)
If you would like a retake of your son/daughter, the original package must be returned. The photographer will retake photos on Thursday, October 23rd.
Halloween (High School and Middle School Division)
On October 31st, Coyle and Cassidy High School will celebrate Halloween. Students will be allowed to come to school in costume and “treats” will be given out during the school day.
Students may wear costumes, face paint, etc. There are to be no masks or weapons/mock weapons. If a costume has a mask, the student may carry the mask and show it with the costume at the appropriate times. Costumes are to be in good taste, therefore no inappropriate messages or symbols. Clothing should not be overly tight or revealing. If in doubt, ask Mrs. Angeley if the costume would be appropriate.
Our students have a great time on Halloween and are so good at balancing all of the fun with learning. Encourage your son/daughter to participate in the fun. When students share some of their fondest memories of Coyle and Cassidy, Halloween is always on the list.
Sophomore Halloween Party for Local Children (High School)
It has been a long standing tradition that the sophomore class partner with the Food Pantry to offer a Halloween Party for local children. The date of the party is Saturday, October 25th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sophomores are encouraged to participate in the following ways. They can bring individually packaged candy (no nuts please) to school to be used at the party, decorations for the party, $1.00 to defray costs (donations by Tuesday, October 21st) and/or give of their time to assist with the children on the day of the party. This event is always a fun and rewarding experience. Encourage your son/daughter to participate. For more information, please contact Mrs. Madden by email at [email protected].
Parents, Grandparents, Brothers, Sisters, Aunts, Uncles, and Friends of the Class of 2015 (High School)
You will receive an email next week with a message from the Yearbook Staff about purchasing an ad in the 2015 Yearbook. This is a great opportunity to congratulate your graduate. From the Health Office
I have sent letters home to many of you requesting current immunization information for your children. Thank you to those of you who have provided this necessary information. For those of you who have not provided an update, please do so by October 24.
As we move into cold and flu season, asthma symptoms can flare up. If your child has asthma, it would be prudent to have an inhaler at school. All medications, including inhalers (and Epi Pens) must be accompanied by a doctor’s order.
In November, I will begin Mandatory Screenings, which include: height & weight screenings (grades 7 and 10), postural screening (grades 6-9) and hearing and vision screenings (grades 6 and 9). These screenings will take several months to complete. Before I begin postural screenings, I will send home notification so that girls may have the opportunity to wear something under their school shirts. **If you do not wish for your child to have these screenings done, you must notify me in writing**

Helpful Hints for Middle School Families
Did You Know!
Research shows that most tweens would like to talk more with their families about schoolwork. Ask your child to share what he or she is learning in classes. Be specific: “What kind of math problems did you do today?” or “Tell me about the science experiment you did in lab today.”
